Gaining and Sustaining Energy

Gaining and Sustaining Energy

We all have differing levels of energy and varying workloads. Such is life. But where we can help ourselves, we should. Here’s a list of specifics I’ve practiced for 52 years since I began my first full-time ministry position.

I would…

  1. Pray for energy and motivation.
  2. Get enough sleep and see if the challenges are still there when I woke up. This is especially important on Friday and Saturday nights. They both affect your Sunday strength and efficiency.
  3. Exercise three or four times a week. A noon or mid-afternoon jog or workout will provide energy for the rest of the day.
  4. Do administration work during less-than-peak hours.
  5. Eat the right kind of food. Sugar highs provide momentary energy only.
  6. Not carry grudges. They truly drain energy.
  7. Practice 1 Peter 5:7. Trust builds stamina.
  8. If making little progress on a text or project, get up and walk around to other offices for a few minutes, call someone to thank them, or walk outside.
  9. Read a psalm or kneel to pray.
  10. Close my eyes for 12 minutes. President Kennedy made that famous.
