(Part 3) Handling Disappointment with Circumstances

(Part 3) Handling Disappointment with Circumstances

Last time we saw that when our circumstances are dark, difficult, and disappointing, our first need is to rekindle our confident trust in the ability of our God, as Paul did in 2 Timothy 1:12. The second response to disappointing circumstances is absolutely dependent upon that confident trust. Only to the degree that our confidence is in Him will be able to respond in this way, which is the hard way—the difficult way.

This second response is expressed by Paul during his first imprisonment and really raises the bar on our response to disappointing circumstances. It is the response of a contented heart. In a very familiar text, Paul declared: “Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content” (Phil. 4:11).

“Whatever state I am” is a huge phrase because it is absolutely leak-proof. There is no circumstance that falls outside the scope of that declaration—and that is what makes it so powerful. If our confidence is deeply rooted in the plans, purposes, and power of our heavenly Father, no circumstance can derail that confidence. The most challenging seasons of life are but further reason to abandon ourselves to Him.

So, when the circumstances in our ministries are discouraging or disappointing, we must steel ourselves with two weapons—confident trust in the ability of our God and contentment with His plan for even this moment. It’s not easy, but it can be the hardest, most blessed lesson we ever learn on our spiritual journey.
