Rooted And Established (Part Two)

Rooted And Established (Part Two)

This week we are examining Colossians 2:6-7 as a pattern for building followers of Christ who are strong and stable—like trees planted by the waters. Yesterday we saw that this kind of life begins with relationship with God through Christ. Today we see another key to a life that is rooted and established in Him.

The Challenge (v.6b)

Having a relationship with Christ is one thing—but consistently living that relationship out is another matter altogether. Paul says that, because we have relationship with Him we are to…

“walk in Him…”

This is critical, because “walk” is representative of the daily living out our beliefs. As we are walking through life, we are expressing Christ in that living. This imagery is used frequently to make precisely that point:

  • walk in newness of life. (Rom.6:4)
  • we walk by faith, not by sight (2 Cor.5:7)
  • walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. (Gal. 5:16)
  • walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called (Eph.4:1)
  • walk in love (Eph.5:2)
  • walk, not as unwise men but as wise (Eph. 5:15)
  • walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light (1 John 1:7)

What I would suggest is that all of those things fold together to become what Paul tells us here… “walk in Him.” And, to take it even further, we will only be able to walk in love, light, faith, etc. because we are walking in Him.

This affirms the reality that we do not live the Christian life in a way that is merely informational—that information must impact our day-to-day lives.

The choices we make.

The attitudes we carry.

The relationships we build.

It is all a part of the way we walk… in Him.

We will bring this study to a close tomorrow.
