“A Call For Gentleness” (Part Three)

“A Call For Gentleness” (Part Three)

Today we conclude our look at the fruit of the Spirit called “gentleness” and see some areas of application for this much-needed character quality.

Not only is this character trait described as a “fruit of the Spirit” it is also seen as a trademark of spiritual maturity. Notice how thoroughly “gentleness” is to pervade our lives…

  • Dealing with other believers- Paul said, “But we proved to be gentle among you, as a nursing mother tenderly cares for her own children.” 1 Thess 2:7.
  • Dealing with business relationships- “Servants, be submissive to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the harsh.” 1 Pet 2:18.
  • Dealing with sinning believers- “Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.” Gal 6:1.
  • Dealing with personal testimony- “Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand.” Phil. 4:5.
  • Dealing with personal behavior/attitudes- “not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous;” 1 Tim 3:3.

How does this operate in life? It operates in life by operating in our relationships- and the model? Paul gives it to us, and, without even using the word “gentle” describes gentleness perfectly…

“Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.” Philippiansi 2:3-4.

Not surprisingly, this is the mind of Christ! Let us learn of Him—and make our gentleness known to all men. The Lord is at hand—perhaps today!
