This week we are considering the “omni” attributes of God as described by David in Psalm 139. On Monday we saw the encouraging reality of God’s omniscience. Today we see…
God’s Omnipresence (vv.7-12)
“Omnipresence” means that God is everywhere present at once. David gives five dramatic examples of that reality…
- Heaven (v.8)- the hope of the believer is not a place, but His presence.
- Sheol (v.8)- pit, the place of the dead hell, grave, great depth
- Wings of dawn (v.9)- the miracle of light expanding across the morning sky—at 186,000 miles per second.
- Remote part of the sea- “lay hold of me”; what Jonah learned the hard way, we can learn by his experience—you cannot run from God to a place where He cannot reach you.
- Darkness (vv.11-12)- read and meditate on David’s amazing words. This is truly beautiful.
This God who is everywhere present at once deserves the worship of a creation bound by the limitations of time and space that do not bind Him. No wonder scholars of old referred to God as “the Divine Other.”
Wednesday we will close by seeing God’s great omnipotence.
