We are looking this week at what constitutes a life that matters—a life that influences others for the cross of Christ. On Monday we saw this is critical because people need examples, and on Wednesday that people must learn to be examples. Now, we consider a final reason this is critical…
People Need Peace (Phil. 4:9)
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. (vv.4-9)
Notice the characteristics of the example they are to follow and to offer: joy (v.4), patience (v.5), trust (v.6), assurance (v.7), purity of thought (v.8). This example is not a moralistic end to itself. It is not a checklist for blessing. It is more.
The ultimate result is peace. It is the example of the life that is in harmony with heart of God, so that the peace of God (v.7) is experienced because the God of peace is honored and exalted in the heart and life of the believer.
Peace. Peace of mind is at the heart of so many ad campaigns. It sells tires, medications, insurance, financial planning services, and a hundred other things. People are desperate for peace. We need to follow the right examples so people can follow our example and can know, understand, and experience the peace and presence of God. That is a challenge worthy of our effort. That is the way to live a life that matters.
This stuff is so basic and simple that we could easily overlook its significance. The fact, however, remains that the examples we set can make all the difference in the world. That is at the heart of living a life that matters—influence and impact with results bringing peace to the hearts and lives of others.
