This week we are watching Abraham as he responded to the “terrible goodness” of God. His first response on Monday was obedience. But he not only obeyed…
He Worshiped (v.5)
“I and the lad will go yonder; and we will worship…”
This is worship at its very heart! In 2 Samuel 24:18-25, David comes to the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite, and asks if he can buy the property in order to establish an altar and offer sacrifices of worship to the Lord. Araunah offers to give him the land, but David responds (v.24)—
I will not offer burnt offerings to the Lord
That which cost me nothing!
David understood that sometimes worship is costly. So did Abraham. He goes forward, viewing his movements as an expression of worship to the God who deserves our full, uninhibited obedience. God will not necessarily ask us what he asked Abraham—but He will ask us something.
Again, Paul saw it as part of a surrendered life when he declared Romans 12:1-2:
“I beseech you therefore brethren by the mercies of God that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable unto God which is your reasonable service (latreueo- act of worship).”
Abraham understood—and went to the mountain to worship in a costly expression of worship.
On Friday, we will consider a third and final response Abraham gave to God’s terrible goodness.
